![]() I argue that we should give people more options to participate in Web3. It doesn’t matter if you are in school, an elite IT person, or a grandparent. They just use it their way and get things done. You don’t hear people arguing whether email is centralized or decentralized. The protocol is freely accessible and there is an abundance of clients and choices. Or you may choose to set up your own servers and keep full control. You can use Gmail or Proton or any other service hosted by a third party to have ease of access. ![]() I want to propose a counter-argument: EmailĮmail is sufficiently decentralized. Or instead staying true to Web3 values, but never reaching escape velocity to become widely adopted technology. We are in a dilemma of seemingly having to choose between compromising our Web3 values and getting corrupted by the tendencies we wish to overcome. It just works!Ĭopy of Untitled drawing (1) (1) 947×522 72.4 KB It’s a frictionless user experience that allows you to onboard without reading a single line about what web3 is and does. It’s already happening: Subsocial recently launched grill.chat, a chat frontend for Subsocial Network that does not require you to have any tokens or sign transactions. ![]() It doesn’t have to be that way! Web3 apps could actually have minimal barriers to entry and be easy to use! It’s an impediment that might be tolerable (or even enjoyable) for innovators and maybe early adopters, but that will definitely block us from reaching the majority of Internet users. It reminds us of the early days of the Web, where you were forced to install chat clients (IRC/ICQ/MSN), email clients, etc. ![]() In virtually every practical use case Bob has to install client software (signers/wallets), read tutorials, buy tokens from exchanges, bridge them, etc… Just to be able to re-take control of the web and interact without trusted intermediaries. Web3, including Polkadot, has horrendous UX. Only after users are getting interested in the product, they are provided with low-barrier ways to increasingly become part of the platform by sharing content and eventually creating an account. Google, YouTube, Twitter… If you are just passing by, you can consume it without questions asked. Successful Web2 products have a great onboarding experience.
